p53 protein is a tumor suppressor that induces growth arrest or apoptosis depending on the physiological circumstances and cell type. It is expressed ubiquitous; isoforms are expressed in a wide range of normal tissues. Mutation and/or allelic loss of p53 gene is one of the causes of the occurrence of a variety of mesenchymal and epithelial tumors. This antibody recognizes a 53 kDa phosphoprotein, it reacts with the mutant as well as wildtype form of p53. Positive nuclear staining with this antibody is a negative prognostic factor in carcinoma of breast, lung, colon, and urothel; and it helps to differentiate uterine serous carcinoma from endometrioid carcinoma as well as to detect intratubular germ cell neoplasia. p53 localizes in the nucleus, but is detectable at the plasma membrane during mitosis and when certain mutations modulate cytoplasmic/nuclear distribution.
