Transthyretin transports thyroid hormones in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, as well as retinol (vitamin A) in the plasma. Expression is found in choroid plexus epithelial cells, in retina pigment epithelium and liver. Most mutations in this gene are related to amyloid deposition affecting predominantly peripheral nerves and/or the heart.
