Keratins are cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins expressed by epithelial cells and their neoplasms. Cytokeratin 19 is a type I keratin and in contrast to all other keratins does it have no designated partner for filament formation. Expression is mainly found in simple and stratified epithelia.
Antibody Cytokeratin 19 may be helpful to detect a variety of epithelial malignancies, including thyroid tumors, hepatocellular carcinomas, and carcinomas of pancreas and GIT.
