Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) is an enzyme that is involved in the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2, an important precursor of prostacyclin, which is expressed in inflammation. The expression of COX2 is upregulated in many cancers. The overexpression along with increased angiogenesis and SLC2A1 (GLUT-1) expression is significantly associated with gallbladder carcinomas. Furthermore, the product prostaglandin H2is converted by prostaglandin E2 synthase into PGE2, which in turn can stimulate cancer progression. Consequently, inhibiting COX2 may have benefit in the prevention and treatment of these types of cancer.
