CD20 recognizes a glycoprotein of 36 kDa and is expressed on the surface of all B-cells. It is involved in B-cell activation, proliferation and differentiation and therefore one of the most important B-cell markers. Positive cells exhibit a cytoplasmic staining. On tonsils and hyperplastic lymph nodes BLA 36 stains centrocytes and to a lesser degree centrocytes in the germinal centers. In the mantle zone 30 to 60 % of the B-cells are stained as well as interdigitating reticulum cells. BLA 36 reacts with all HD subtypes, including Sternberg-Reed cells, Hodgkin cells and variants. In Non-Hodgkin lymphomas the majority of B-cell lineage lymphomas is detected.
