Apolipoproteins are proteins that bind lipids to form lipoproteins and to transport lipids through the lymphatic and circulatory systems, and to serve as enzyme cofactors as well as receptor ligands. Apolipoprotein D is a progesterone binding glycoprotein and constituent of HDL in plasma. The function of Apolipoprotein D in the metabolism of plasma lipoproteins is unclear but is occurs in the macromolecular complex with lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase. It may be involved in transport and binding of bilin, and may be able to transport a variety of ligands in a number of different contexts. It is expressed in liver, intestine, pancreas, kidney, placenta, adrenal, spleen, fetal brain tissue, and tears.
