Androgen receptor (AR) belongs to the nuclear receptor family and is essential for hormone-refractory and hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. After activation by androgenic hormones testosterone or dihydrotestosterone in cytoplasm, AR translocates in the nucleus and promotes transcription of its target genes by binding to specific DNA sequences called AREs (androgen response elements). This activation mediates the development and maintenance of prostate. AR is expressed in epithelial and stromal cells in normal prostate. The detection of AR is helpful for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
