Protease inhibitors

The isolation of proteins and peptides from a biological matrix is the most important procedure to obtain this group of substances. Their processing is often accompanied by a loss of activity and yield caused by enzymatic decomposition. This decomposition of peptide compounds is due to proteases (proteolysis) which occur in nearly every biological material. Proteolysis can be efficiently inhibited in vivo and in vitro by numerous protease inhibitors. Protease inhibitors are classified on the basis of their decomposition specificity and the kind of the functional group in the neighbouring target proteases taking the most important part in the decomposition reaction. Protease inhibitors are employed in biochemical and clinical diagnostic research.
